As a chiropractor, people usually look at me strange when I suggest that their children see a chiropractor for common childhood problems like ear infections, colic, reflux, etc. I get even weirder looks when I suggest chiropractic for kids with Autism, ADHD, sensory and spectrum kids. Most people think that the child doesn’t have a neck or back problem so a trip to the chiropractor is not needed. However all chiropractors are not the same. We all care for our practice members in different ways. The traditional chiropractor focuses on pain and symptoms to treat you. I’m sure there is someone you know with a story of quick movements and pop noises. However contemporary chiropractic focuses on your nervous system and your overall health and function. It’s not your parent’s chiropractic.

We have a video for a more in depth explanation here.

I say this because kids with Autism, ADHD, sensory, and spectrum problems have their nervous systems greatly affected. Since the nervous system is the master controller of your body it affects everything from digestion, immune, and behavioral issues.

In our office we see birth injury as the process which the problem is caused. This is backed up by a medical study which showed that 80% of infants born had some spinal injury. The injury was localized to the neck of the infant due to C-section, forceps, vacuum extraction, and prolonged pushing all which increased the risk of injury.

The study stated that infants should be checked right after birth for the injury. However no one in the medical industry is trained to address this sort of issue. So these injuries are not addressed or mentioned to parents. I believe if the injury could have been addressed by a chiropractor right then that the risk factors would drop drastically. With Autism rates skyrocketing, prevention is the best avenue of care instead of trying to find a cure.

Once the injury occurs it can cause tension on the brain stem, spinal cord, and spinal nerves. This condition is called a subluxation. The subluxation causes problems with communication going to and from the brain. If this is not corrected it puts the nervous system into a chronic or permanent fight or flight response. While we all need this response for short periods, it’s when it is on for long periods of time that we see all the conditions like colic, ear infection digestive problems, behavior problems, sleep challenges, social issues, etc.

While stuck in this fight or flight response all healing and growth is reduced. The immune and digestive systems are hit the worst with children. Since both systems are interrelated the child can become stuck in a viscous cycle of symptoms and conditions which can make life a real challenge.

A chiropractor locates and removes the tension and interference on the nervous system. We do this with a specific chiropractic adjustment. This looks immensely different when done on an infant or child. The pressure used is like what is used to test the ripeness of a tomato. The greater the severity and longer duration of the condition dictate how long care will take. Repeated adjustments produce positive change in the child’s nervous system and can improve their health, behavior, digestion, immunity and more. Most pediatricians don’t understand subluxations. Chiropractors are the only licensed professional who is trained in locating removing subluxation.

One last thing is that Autism is a family problem. By that, I mean that Autism affects everyone in the family, the challenges that come up put stress on the family as a whole. I mention this because it is the airplane emergency scenario. As a parent, if you don’t take care of yourself you will not be able to help take care of your child.
